Solarigraph draws every path the sun takes through the year over your view of the sky. There is no account, no advertising, and no analytics or third-party SDKs in the app, and there is no Solarigraph server. The short version: the sky is worked out on your iPhone, and your photos stay on it.
What stays on your device
Everything the app keeps is stored on your iPhone: the photos you take with its shutter, the viewpoint each one was taken from (the location, the direction the phone was pointing, and the time), any name you give a view, and the date and time you picked on its sun path. The app also remembers a few settings: the last place it charted, and which tips you have already seen. None of this is sent to us — we have nowhere to send it to, and no way to read it.
Like any app’s data, it may be included in your iPhone’s own backups (iCloud or a computer), under your Apple Account and Apple’s terms rather than ours.
The one thing that leaves your device
To show a place name such as “San José” instead of a pair of coordinates, the app asks Apple’s geocoding service, built into iOS, to name the location being charted. That request carries the coordinate and goes to Apple, not to us; Apple handles it under its own privacy policy. It happens for where you are when you open the Sky tab, and for a saved photo when you open it. If the lookup fails, the app simply shows no name.
The positions of the sun themselves are computed on the phone, and need no network at all.
Camera, location, and motion
- Camera shows the live view the sun’s paths are drawn over, and takes a photo when you press the shutter. Photos are saved inside the app, not to your photo library.
- Location is used to know which sun paths to draw, since they are different from every place on earth. It is used only while the app is open, and is kept only on the phone: with each photo’s viewpoint, and as the last place charted so the next launch is quicker.
- Motion sensors line the paths up with wherever you point the phone. Orientation is read live and kept only with a photo, as the direction it was taken in.
Each can be turned off in Settings. Without location there is nothing to chart, so the app says so rather than guessing a place.
Sharing
A saved photo can be shared, with or without its sun paths drawn on. It goes only where you send it. The version with sun paths shows the view’s name or place name, the date and time you selected, and the time zone, printed under the picture, so check that caption before sharing somewhere public. The image file itself carries no GPS location.
What we do not do
- No tracking, no advertising identifiers, no cross-app profiling.
- No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs.
- No collecting, selling or sharing of your data. There is no server of ours holding any of it.
Children
Solarigraph is not directed at children and collects nothing that would identify anyone of any age.
Your choices
Swipe a view in Saved to delete it and its photo. Deleting the app removes everything it stored. There is no copy anywhere else for us to delete on request — but if you have a question, ask.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your device, the effective date above changes with it.
